Providing learners with feedback is critical to learning. Among other benefits, giving feedback:
- Promotes learning, improvement, and academic performance (such as helping identify strengths/weaknesses, enhancing skill development, guiding learning pathways, and providing clear direction).
- Enhances motivation and engagement, cultivating a growth mindset (such as encouraging effort and boosting confidence).
- Supports self-regulated learning (such as fostering independence and encouraging goal setting).
- Builds effective communication (such as encouraging dialogue and developing language and expression skills).
- Improves teacher effectiveness and teacher-student relationships (such as informing instruction, supporting differentiation, and individualizing learning). (Check out the eMINTS PAL Program to learn more about enhancing TSRs in your school!)
- Encourages accountability and responsibility (such as promoting ownership over learning and creating learners who are active in their learning).
When providing feedback, make sure it is: timely, specific, relevant, balanced (both positive and constructive), student-centered, and actionable.
Try using BigBlueButton, Sakai LMS, Formative, or AnswerGarden to help you give learners feedback. You might even have learners use these tools to give each other feedback!
