Tip: Emotionally Upbeat Classroom > Gratitude

Did you know that research shows adopting an attitude of gratitude can drastically improve your overall well-being. People who purposefully express gratitude are more likely to help others, a prosocial behavior linked to greater happiness (The Science of Gratitude, 2016).


Gratitude can:

  • Increase happiness.
  • Reduce depression.
  • Strengthen resilience.
  • Reduce blood pressure.
  • Lessen chronic pain.
  • Increase energy.
  • Lengthen lives.
  • Promote self-esteem.
  • Positively rewire our brains.


Here are a few simple ways to intentionally cultivate an attitude of gratitude:

  • Celebrate minor accomplishments.
  • Think about what you have rather than dwelling on what you don’t.
  • Tell the people in your life something you appreciate about them; tell yourself too!
  • Volunteer, or hold the door for a stranger.
  • Practice meditation and mindfulness.
  • Keep a daily gratitude journal.
  • Or, use last month’s tip and smile more!
