Did you know that research shows adopting an attitude of gratitude can drastically improve your overall well-being. People who purposefully express gratitude are more likely to help others, a prosocial behavior linked to greater happiness (The Science of Gratitude, 2016).
Gratitude can:
- Increase happiness.
- Reduce depression.
- Strengthen resilience.
- Reduce blood pressure.
- Lessen chronic pain.
- Increase energy.
- Lengthen lives.
- Promote self-esteem.
- Positively rewire our brains.
Here are a few simple ways to intentionally cultivate an attitude of gratitude:
- Celebrate minor accomplishments.
- Think about what you have rather than dwelling on what you don’t.
- Tell the people in your life something you appreciate about them; tell yourself too!
- Volunteer, or hold the door for a stranger.
- Practice meditation and mindfulness.
- Keep a daily gratitude journal.
- Or, use last month’s tip and smile more!
