eMINTS National Center and the University of Missouri College of Education & Human Development partnership are currently seeking 2nd-grade teachers in rural, high-poverty areas to participate in a literacy recovery program funded by the Department of Education.
We are seeing lasting effects of post-pandemic literacy skills in our students nationwide. Students have rich oral language and experiences that they share verbally, yet many struggle to read. Context is very powerful in learning to read, yet many reading programs and materials just do not connect with students’ experiences. The Talk to Read© program helps teachers learn strategies and use technology to encourage student voice and elicit their experiences and oral language to enhance their reading and writing abilities. Through professional development opportunities, teachers will learn strategic literacy approaches that align with Missouri State ELA standards and support the programs they are already using.
Here are some research data points behind the Talk to Read© program (Baker 2017; 2019; Baker & Dorman 2019):
- Students develop over 97% sight vocabulary accuracy when reading words they generate.
- 50% of learners’ dictated words are high-frequency words.
- Learners can experience 50% inaccuracies when using dictation technologies, yet 0 instances of mistaken word identity.
- Participants developed 97% accuracy for words beyond 9th grade.
Are you a second-grade teacher interested in learning strategies to improve student literacy skills? Teachers who participate will receive professional learning and coaching support, and students will learn how to use their own language and experiences to improve their reading and writing abilities. Participating teachers will receive up to 40 hours of professional learning opportunities and coaching support, a set of tablets and headsets for each student, and a charging station.
