In celebration of March being National Reading Month, we are jumping into “The Reading Club” with these eMINTS Tips! Get your learners to join “The Reading Club” by building a reading community of learners through book clubs.
Here are some tips for hosting book clubs in your classroom:
- Decide on a theme. - Choose book options that all have something similar in common. For this month’s #ReadAcrossAmerica2024 theme, it’s “Celebrate Diversity!”
- Keep groups small. - You want your groups to be manageable in size and less intimidating when learners have book discussions. This is also more manageable for you in facilitating the book clubs!
- Set norms. - What should your book club expectations be? Have learners input their opinions on what successful book clubs look and sound like.
- Diversify accessibility. - Allow learners choices for how they read. There are many formats from which to engage in a text: print, ebook, audiobook. Let learners consume the reading material using the platform of their choice.
- Provide questions. - Have a predetermined list of questions you give learners before having a book discussion in their small group. Better yet, have learners come up with their own questions as they read to ask their Club at the next discussion!
- Include an activity. - Have something for learners to do while they are meeting to discuss the book in their club. Maybe bring a snack, a coloring page, or a word search. This helps the group relax and be more open to discussion.
- Meet regularly. - If you are reading longer novels, have your clubs meet regularly. Make the calendar transparent, so clubs know when they will be meeting to discuss their novel.
