Tip: A Coach's Toolbox > Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is a powerful tool that can enhance the understanding of another person and even increase the impact of another's comments on their thinking. It can help someone clarify or expand their own thinking. At its essence, paraphrasing is repeating in your words what you interpreted someone else to be saying and can help develop a trusting relationship between a coach and coachee. Check out these paraphrasing tips and stems to increase your paraphrasing prowess.
When paraphrasing:
- Focus on the other person.
- Listen for emotion as well as content.
- Remain judgment-free.
- Paraphrase with statements shorter than the original thought.
