Tip: The Persistence Phase > High-Quality Lesson Design

This month’s #emintsTips are all about getting through “The Persistence Phase.” When things get tough during the academic year and we enter this phase, try using these four “S” tricks to help your #HighQualityLessonDesign and make your life easier!
- Start - Sometimes the hardest part of the planning process is just beginning. Start from where you are currently, go with what you already know, and start the snowball rolling. Sometimes, just taking the intentional step to start planning can be the most powerful step.
- Sessions - Set common planning sessions with your colleagues. Might you have common plan times? Utilize this time within the school day. If you don’t have common plan times, find a time that works to meet together on a regular basis (maybe before or after school) to collaborate, share ideas and resources, and divide and conquer the planning process responsibilities. If you’re a “department of one,” try setting aside the same block of time each week as your own personal planning session.
- Standards - Have standards that you know you must address with your learners? Try creating a checklist of those standards and adding the date(s) for when you intentionally teach those standards. Need to show learners a visual of the learning standard addressed for the day? Create reusable learning targets from state learning standards to utilize throughout the year. Have all of them individually laminated and magnetized to simply pull out and adhere to your board. Or, put all standards on a curtain rod and flip to the standard of the day.
- Streamline - Streamline your planning by preparing for a week at a time. Try planning from Tuesday to Tuesday, so you can avoid the “Sunday Scaries” and feel less Monday-morning rush! You don’t necessarily have to plan your days in chronological order. If you know you have a summative assessment coming up on Thursday, start with the test, and then plan backward to get yourself and your learners to Thursday. What might you do to prepare for the exam? What might you do afterward?
