Tip: Planning > Goals & Success
The first two things to consider in the instructional planning process are goals and successes.
Identify goals and/or outcomes. - Start by clearly defining the desired outcomes or learning objectives. These objectives specify what learners should know, understand, and/or be able to do at the end of the instructional unit. Planning with the end in mind helps maintain the same focus throughout the instructional planning process.
Ask: What are some goals I have in mind?
Determine success indicators. - Understand the learners' current knowledge, skills, and interests. Conduct pre-assessments or analyze existing data to determine prior knowledge, learning styles, and any specific needs or challenges they may have. At the end of the instruction, how will we know if learners have met the goals and outcomes? What should they be able to demonstrate? Determine what successful learning looks like using examples, rubrics, baseline scores, etc.
Ask: What might success look/sound like?
