After we have started developing writing skills, we learn authentically by practicing reading what we’ve written.
Voice/Choice: (Resource - Local Public/School Library & Try Tools: @overdrive.inc_ or @HooplaDigital)
- Reading is reading! Whether that be books, magazines, articles, billboards, advertisements, social media, or text messages! Let learners choose what they are most interested to read.
- Allow learners to read in the format they prefer: paper book, eBook, or audiobook. They are all books, and every method is reading!
- Empower learners to ask: What might I most enjoy to read? How might I most prefer to read: print, digital, or audio?
Audience: (Strategy - Guess the Audience by @KPUopen)
- Practice reading different works that were written with different audiences in mind and using these works as mentor texts.
- Try using a “Guess the Audience” strategy where learners analyze the text provided and attempt to guess whom the audience of the text was. The texts could be written from different perspectives. This could also be done using different advertisements and media as the mentor texts.
- Empower learners to ask: Who was this text written for?
Purpose: (Resource - Jeopardy Google Slides Template from @ericcurts)
- The purpose could be the author’s purpose for writing the piece, OR it could be your purpose for reading!
- Try playing a Jeopardy review game for learners to guess the purpose of given mentor texts. Try using advertisements and media as mentor texts to give your practice a little variety.
- Empower learners to ask: What was the purpose the author had for writing this work? Why am I reading? What do I hope to gain or learn from reading?
