As humans, we first develop the ability to listen. The ability to speak quickly follows. So, how do we help build those literacy skills in our learners?
Voice/Choice: (tools - Speech Recognition: Google Docs/Slides Voice Type; MOTE - teacher feedback/recordings)
- Provide feedback and/or instructions in text, images, and audio, allowing learners to decide which mode serves them best.
- Give students the option to record themselves speaking (video or audio-only) and then listening to the recordings of themselves and others.
- Allow students to select the tool they feel most comfortable with to capture their experiences.
- Empower learners to ask: How might I learn best? What tools might I use?
Audience: (tool - SEESAW)
- Give student the opportunity to speak to a specific audience in both formal and informal settings. Start with low-stakes or short tasks to begin practicing.
- Share a variety of audio recording examples, and engage in dialogue about who the audience could be. Also share non-examples for specific audiences.
- Use empathy-building strategies to help learners consider what an audience might want to learn from their presentation.
- Empower learners to ask: To whom might I be listening/speaking? What might the audience want to learn?
Purpose: (tool - Flip)
- Have learners plan and draft their speaking responses.
- Incorporate activities that require writing in preparation for carrying out a speaking task or speaking in preparation for carrying out a writing task.
- Create opportunities for learners to share experiences using video/audio recording tools for a specific purpose. (ie. reflective journal, rehearsal/building confidence presenting, peer feedback)
- Empower learners to ask: Why might I be listening/speaking? What might I want to accomplish?
