For the first tip of this series, use a few search engine tricks to narrow down your search results to find exactly what you’re looking for:
Quotation Marks:
- Find exact wording by putting quotation marks around a phrase.
- Quotation marks act like glue.
- This forces the search engine to find the words in the exact order you want.
- Example: Famous quotes
AND and OR (in all caps)
- Use AND between words to include multiple keywords.
- Use OR to look for matches to either phrase.
- Example: "climate change" OR "global warming"
"site:" (no spaces, no quotation marks)
- Limit your search results to only that website or source.
- Restrict search results to a single website (site:www.nytimes.com) OR
- Search results to a single type of source site
- Example: (site:.edu, site:.gov, site:.mil ← All reliable, all the time!)
