Tip: Spectrum of Inquiry > Closed: Confirmation
With closed projects, the teacher defines the question, process, and conclusion; whereas, an open lesson allows learners to take the reins to define the question, process, and conclusion (Banchi & Bell, 2008). To move a lesson to student-owned on the Spectrum of Inquiry (bit.ly/eMINTSInquiry), teachers can gradually give the students more control over the key features. The process can be gradual to scaffold students to more autonomous learning. Each week this month, we are providing tips to open up your lesson on the Spectrum of Inquiry.
In the Confirmation level of inquiry, the teacher controls the question, process, and conclusion of the project.
Here are some tips for catalyzing student growth from Confirmation exercises toward Structured:
- Question: Offer a question or choice. - Ask AI for additional options from which learners can choose that are similar to the project you have planned.
- Process: Add a random unknown. - Look around the classroom for something that can extend their investigation to explore a mystery.
- Conclusion: Ask students for their ideas. - Create a survey or exit slip that collects their feedback for next time or next year.
